The Scarpa Story:
The story of the Parisotto family, the owners of Calzaturificio S.C.A.R.P.A. S.p.A., began in the 1940s, when at the age of eleven Luigi Parisotto - the fourth of seven brothers - started work as an apprentice shoemaker in several firms and for several artisans in the famed shoe-making area around Montebelluna in northeast Italy.
From the very outset, Luigi loved his work, and for over tens years that enthusiasm buoyed him as he learned the art of shoemaking under the tutorship of a number of skilled craftsmen.
Luigi first came to work at S.C.A.R.P.A. (Societ Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonima (Associated Shoe Manufacturing Company of the Asolo mountain area)) in 1942. The company had been founded on 6 August 1938 by Lord Rupert Edward Cecil Iveagh, an English nobleman who owned land in the district encompassing Asolo. Fascinated by the skills demonstrated by local small craft firms which processed leather and hides, the English lord decided to set up a company which would embrace all the best shoemakers in the area, this for the purpose of creating a trademark par excellence, one featuring great productive capacity and serious ambitions on the international level.
In 1951, Luigi Parisotto was drafted into the military and was thus forced to abandon his beloved profession for a year or so. Upon Luigi's return from service, however, the Parisotto family immediately decided to venture into its own artisan-level shoemaking business. With the help of his brother Francesco, Luigi rented a tiny corner of an old stable from the local parish priest (the stable was owned by church authorities) and turned that nook into an artisan workshop. For space reasons, the new business later moved into a barn -- and thus was born the San Giorgio trademark, named in honour of the town's patron saint. The family's entrepreneurial adventure was on its way.
That period saw workdays which averaged from 13 to 14 hours and production which averaged four of five pairs of shoes a day, shoes made entirely by hand and sold directly to local farm folk - but designed also to meet the particular needs of farmers in the Belluno region and thus made to order. As a matter of fact, Luigi and Francesco rode out on their bicycles into the Belluno region every week to sell their goods and to take measurements for orders from new customers who wanted shoes that both offered a comfortable fit and were virtually indestructible - all at the absurdly low price of about 2,400 lire a pair. In the years following, other members of the Parisotto family (including Antonio, the youngest of the seven brothers) began to take part in the growing business, with the result that it soon became possible to make from 12 to 15 pairs of shoes each day, thereby enabling the San Giorgio trademark to establish an enviable name for itself.
2006 was a special year: it marked 50 years of passionate involvement by the Parisotto family with SCARPA®, company established in 1938.
