Mt. Bachelor holds this one-of-a-kind event inspired by none other than legendary surfer and Mt. Bachelor Ambassador, Gerry Lopez; who hosts the event!
Lopez was born in Hawaii, and grew up on Oahu. A tuberiding specialist, Lopez is known for a "cool-under-fire" style, and widely regarded as The Maven of wave-riding elegance and refinement. Lopez and his family now spend considerable time in Bend, Oregon, where he overseas a small snowboard manufacturing company.
The Big Wave Challenge is snowboard only event features a series of huge sweeping banked corners, quarter pipes and spines that are shaped into wave-like features for a flowing course bringing the surf to the mountain.
Event details, scoring formats, and division information may be found here.
Returning for a second year (dare we call it an annual?) the Mt. Bachelor Prequel is an "old school" freestyle competition. The course consists of handmade features including a mini pipe, side hits, hips, and jibs (on Midway) encouraging skiers and riders to take their most creative approach and walk away with the grand prize...a handmade SnoPlank!
